Check out JL’s new video titled. “I’m Still Here” Cambodian people unite!

I love discovering new up and coming and artists and I was fortunate to meet Khris aka BB Slim. He’s a Cambodian-Canadian rapper from Ontario who is on the verge of breaking out. Not only can he rap, he sings too. With his fresh approach on the Cambodian hip hop scene he’s making videos left and right and is quite the lady’s man. Check out his latest vid and his interview with yours truly.

So you’re from Toronto, where Drake is from. How is the hip hop game up in the T dot?

BB Slim: Absolutely, Born and raised in a subdivided city called Brampton “B-town” with my three older brothers Kevin (Chubbie Kay), Dommie, and Bong Chai.
Now we live in Vancouver, B.C but still rep Toronto to the fullest. I always say this to anyone that ask me about Toronto, “Toronto is where my heart is at”.
Drake is one of my favorite rappers out there in the music industry, i look up to his music and hes also a great role model as well. Hes the one who put Toronto on the map. Among one of the most successful rappers out there.
The Hip Hop game in Toronto is really versatile, much of that soul and New york type of rapping flavor. I kind of revolved around all types/genres of music that is why my style of rap changes sometimes. But ever since i moved to Vancouver, i started liking the West Coast/L.A vibe.

I see that you not only rap, but you sing as well. Tell me where you draw your inspiration for your lyrics.

BB Slim: Where do I draw my inspiration for my lyrics hmm good question lol. If the song I was writing is soulful/Rnb, i get my lyrics from lifetime experiences, such as school, family, friends, relationships, and other things people can relate to, thats where the rnb part of me comes from. If it was a “Swagg” type of song, meaning commercial-wise, ill try to get the attention the young generation of hip hop, and people who really enjoy listening to my music, I do my music for the fans.

You kind of have a ladies man vibe to you. Is it true that you have a way with the ladies?

BB Slim: Lol wow, yeah i do have a way with the ladies and it is true, i love the feeling of the connection i have with them. Not to be too cocky or anything lol.
this is usually where I do my R&B music. But I got to be honest, Im a shy guy unless you really get to know me, thats when I start to get talkative and sociable.

So is there going to be a mixtape of some sort coming out soon? If so, when.

BB Slim: There is a mixtape in progress right now, not too sure when it will be out but it’s upcoming. Right now Chubbie Kay and I are working our butts off trying to get this mixtape finished and ready for our listeners and subscribers, even for the new listeners out there that haven’t heard any of my music yet. It is called “Get Fly, Or Get Flown Over pt.1”. While our friends are out there partying and chillin’, having a good time. Chubbie kay and I are in the studio, working to get this mixtape DONE!. Thats just how we do lol Chubbie kay is my right hand man in this music industry, he’s my partner in crime or whatever lol.

Are you a part of a rap group or are you a solo artist? If you are part of a group, tell me more about your crew.

BB Slim: I Am part of three rap groups: KBH Ent (Khmer Brother Hood Entertainment) was the first group that me and Chubbie kay started with when we first began to rap In Tdot and its still going on till this day. Next group is GOUN KHMER, as some of you know, we came up with the Goun khmer anthem that lead to about 70,000 views all combined from each of the members you tube Channels. We started Goun Khmer when we first moved to British Columbia out in the West side. We met up with our far-Cousin Narin (Thugbodian), and began rapping together at his studio, that’s also how we met Scar. then that’s when we formed G.K for the Khmer music industry. And finally, i came up with East Swagg Gang, because originally I was from the east side and I was always about my swagg. I’m trying to find rappers out-there who fit my style of rap and recruit them into my group. But right now, I am doing my solo music “thing” right now, making exclusive tracks and shooting music videos.

Have you considered making an entire R&B compilation? If so, what kind of songs would you be singing about?

BB Slim:  I wouldn’t make a R&b mixtape or album yet, I still got to improve on my vocal skills but I really see myself as a rapper than a singer, being a rapper really suits my image, not an R&B singer. I would sing if  I sang like Drake lol!

Do you rap in Khmer or French? If yes, tell me more. If not, would you consider either?

BB Slim: Rapping in khmer is kinda tough for me because I’m not fluent in our language, but i do know some words and understand our khmer language. I only rap in khmer when we’re making a song for our Goun Khmer fans. But KBH ent and East Swagg Gang is all strictly in English.

You’re only 18, so how long have you been actually rapping or making music and are you the only person in your family who makes music?

BB Slim: I’m turning 19 in February 13, a day before Valentines day/Lovers Day. Maybe thats where I get my “Ladies Man” side lol jkin..I am still young so I got a long way to go in life to develop and experience many things that life has to offer. I’ve started rapping when I was 15 i think, and when I started rapping, Chubbie Kay also started rapping, then my two other brothers, Dommie and Bong Chai got into music as well like 2 years after I started. They support my whole Music Career, without them, I am nothing. Also my Dad loves music too! He plays in a band, and he knows how to play Cambodian traditional music that you hear in Weddings, and Bouns. Khmer parents always gotta play karaoke and sing every weekend lol. My Family is into music, without music, life would be boring. I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge in college or a University so I can compose my own music. Family and education are important as well. Some people just throw away their education like it’s nothing. I know most asian parents want their son or daughter to be doctor or whatever, but I see myself doing music as my occupation in the future.

—Do you produce your own tracks or do you have a producer that you currently work with?

BB Slim: Chubbie Kay is currently my producer right now. He’s the one who edits everything, our music, our videos, he’s the man behind the work. He’s the one who deserves the credit when credit is due.

Okay so I always ask this. What is your most favorite Khmer dish?

BB Slim: Probably the most common, Katiev (NOT PHO lol) Khmer Style.

If you had the chance to work with any artist dead or alive…who would it be and why.
BB Slim: I would like to work with Drake, Tyga or Lil Wayne! Basically any one from Young Money, cause I like the type and style of music they make plus they’re making alot of mula. And I would like to work with Chris Brown cause he is dope and he has my type of swagg, he’s actually my favourite R&B artist.

Have you been to Cambodia, and if so tell me about your experience. If not, do you plan on going?

BB Slim: I have been to Cambodian only once, it was the best experience because I have never been to a foreign country before. Seeing a lot of Khmer people in every direction surprised me and I had a feeling of “This is where i belong!”. I love the food in srok khmer and seeing our traditional culture in person and not from videos or karaoke DVD’s lol. And it was the First time meeting our real blood relatives, my grandma, aunt, uncle and cousin. You know how it is in Canada or America…we call every one our cousins when their not really our real cousins lmao. But it was great to met relatives who are blood tide to mines. All I gotta say is srok khmer was a Blast, any one who hasnt been there yet — plan your vacation and go!

Oye! This Frank Ocean has got me thinking a lot! Like I said, his lyrics paint a masterpiece as I listen to him sing about his life stories. American Wedding is another track off his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra which resonated in me. Reason being is that I felt like he was singing for me. I know that sounds kind of strange but every word in that song is relevant to me and my life. The track features The Eagles Hotel California but he totally changed the words and the melody of the song. It gives me goosebumps and I listen to it almost every day. Weddings have become so overrated nowadays in America, because the divorce rate is so high. I, too myelf was married in a courthouse at the age of 21 and eloped and didn’t tell my parents until almost a year or two after we were married. I love this song and so should you! So listen and tell me what you think!

Yup, my boys Vandaliss are back at it again with their latest track Rhythm Of The Night. Old school sample with a sick flow. Who could ask for more? Check out their Connecticut swag! Asian boys who can rap….NICE!

OMG. I love this song!! I can’t get it out of my head and the melody of the piano is so enchanting. Again, another song off  Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra that’s got me hooked!

Okay, there are a few people I’d like to shit on! So Imma have to put my number 2’s in the air! This vid is basically a compilation of all her concerts, tours and performances. I thought it would be more of a real video, but hey this will do for now. “All these bitches is my sons!” lol

So he’s finally famous! Yup! It’s about damn time, since I’ve heard about him like a few years ago. Ugh, so I guess everyone finally jumped on the bandwagon. Well, most of you have already heard of this joint since it’s been receiving mad airplay on almost every radio station.  He’s got an easy recognizable tone to his voice, so you’ll definitely know it’s him when you hear him. Hope to hear more from Big Sean, he’s a breath of fresh air. ahhh….

Who is Childish Gambino you ask? Well, if you’re not living under a rock and actually watch TV then you would know him as Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) from the sitcom The Community. Not only is this guy a comedian, he’s an actor, writer, and producer! Yes, I know! Who would have thought this mild mannered kid from the tube is multi-talented. His flow is sick, his punchlines are so hilarious that you can’t help but say….WHAT?! Check him out in his new video Freaks & Geeks. I dig his style and his music is superb!

I was never really a “fan” of Kelly’s. I mean, it’s not like I had anything against her, but I was a Beyonce nut! She outdid herself with this joint here though! I can’t get it outta my head and it’s definitely for the grown and sexy. So turn down the lights and find some motivation with your man or woman, and get yo groove on!

Okay so when I first saw this video, I really didn’t know what to make of it. I mean, ya girl goes hard on the beat! Gotta give her credit though, it’s hard to freestyle for that long and say a bunch of shit while you have a tube embedded in your neck. She goes off beat for a minute and then catches right back on. These chicks need to step up their rap game, cus this chick is comin’ for the belt. DING! lol
